I opened a small
general contracting company in order to profit from the construction
experience I had gained in residential and commercial construction
jobs I had worked since turning 16 years old in 1972.
I was
responsible for all aspects of the operations of the company:
Hiring and
firing of all employees and sub-contractors
Work
scheduling and project planning
Sales of all jobs and projects
Job pricing / estimating
Supervising
the completion of all elements of every contract &
customer satisfaction
We specialized
in:
Additions
Cement
work
Decking
Roofing
Electrical
Welding
Plumbing
Sheetrock
Painting
Flooring
Reason
for leaving: About
16 months after hurricane Frederick it became hard to find enough
qualified helpers and foremen to produce enough work to make it worthwhile to stay
in business. Everyone
that was good at their job went into business for themselves and you
could no longer make a buck. There were so many contractors cutting
everyone's prices just to get the jobs that were left, no one could
make any money so I left the business to work at Wigman's Hardware.
Suppliers were doing a booming business so I shifted to that part of
the equation.
